Gary Fogelman ISAC 98.

Reports from Hammonassett CT say Gary Fogelman threw a 98 on Sunday.  For those that are interested, Gary competes in the primitive category using river cane darts that he makes himself. He routinely throws in the 90's and this is his second 98 when it counts.  To the best of my knowledge this moves Gary in to 1st place.  Congratulations, Gary!  It will be interesting to see if anybody can challenge this score in the few remaining events for 2012.

White ash Broken roof cave atlatl replica

Hello,

This is my replica of the broken roof cave atlatl. Made of white ash (Fraxinus ornus). Length - 53.3 cm. Width - 2.5 cm. Thickness - 6.3-6.5 mm. Commercial tanned leater for the loops.
For the binding I use cords of nettles and red deer tendon.
Large weight is siliceous stone (probably quartzite) and weighs 46.7 grams. Little is of unknown type stone and weighs 10 grams. Both are attached
with sinew strips and glued with hide glue.

There is still a lot to be desired, but as a first of its kind that I've worked, I think it's good.

Deerfield ISAC and stone age event

Here are some photos from the 13 October event in Deerfield, MA. Attending from Paleoplanet were Ken, Matt, Mike, Linda, and Gary. It was a great day, the weather was perfect, and it was worth the work it takes to host an event like this. We had an ISAC, archery, staff slinging and hand slinging, bola, cave art, flint knapping, and fire making. Equipment was provided to all participants who didn't bring their own (Gary and Linda provided some atlatls, thanks guys!), and the club provided a bunch of fiberglass bows and arrows. It ran all day. It always is so exciting to see everyone having fun and learning new things in a safe environment.

Atlatl Weights

Can someone who regularly attaches atlatl weights show some close ups of how they attach the weight so it stays in place and doesn't rattle.  I live in the southeast so humidity is a problem, hide glue tends to soak it up and loosen, so I will probably be using modern glue, but I'm not all that wild about the idea.  So, if you have a way of attaching that doesn't use glue, what do you have to do to the atlatl or weight or both to make them stay in place?  Other than wrap the weight up like a mummy, that works but doesn't look all that great.

Here’s a few phone pics from the Missouri Days festival in Trenton MO today.  The highlight was the excellent foam animal targets made by Steve Spencer-the mammoth was particularly impressive!

Hello Palio World , I'm new here , I was recently diagnosed with a severe case of AtlAtl fever . No cure , imagine that I'd like to thank and honor Jim Baggs , for the lesson in atlatling . His teaching was simple and very effective . Covered all the bases , history , safety and technique . His hunts are successful , and who could resist custom made darts . Check it out Atlatl - Darts . Com . I'm from a family of hunters but this Palio world present a great challenge to us , real skill . Anyone can pull a trigger , stepping back in time to see real survivor skills is an Art . Perhaps a lost Art .... Again , Thank you Jim for all your hard work . Palio World I look forward to learning and sharing with you . PalioPeg

Hitting Right

I have been hitting to the right of my point of aim, at 10 yards it is about a foot, at 15, it is 1 to 3 feet off, and at 20, it can be as much as 5.  I make sure I am doing a follow through and that I roll my wrist all the way over in the throw, I'm not throwing with all my might, I feel relaxed and not tense, I'm just hitting right of my target.  And I can not figure out why.  Last week, I was hitting a coffee cup lid at least once out of three throws at 15 yards.

I am throwing with a hammer grip and using a 7 foot, ash dart that weighs about 8 ounces, at the start of the throw, the dart is pinched with my thumb and forefinger.  Any guesses?  I know a few pictures would help but I can't do it right now.

Yep I like chucking! Time to make some more!

Wanted to try my hand at chucking so I ordered some darts and carved out a rough Atlatl to see if it was something I thought I would enjoy. I should have known better! My first 30-40 throws were a blast. Most would hit a trash can size lid with about every 3-4 hitting a Frisbee sized target at about 15 yards.

Now it’s on to trying some different designs as I can see were handle style could really play into individual confidence and accuracy. I see many works of art on this site. How is everybody going about constructing these?

For example, I cut out a rough blank on a band saw and then did a lot of rasp work to round corners and remove stock.  While I enjoyed the work I thought...

a couple of replicas

I was recently asked to be in some videos for the Wetlands Park Museum in Las Vegas, NV. they wanted some interactive displays showing modern people performing primitive skills. they asked me to do some flintknapping and atlatl tossing. not knowing what they want exactly for the production, i've decided to bring along several throwers including these two. the first is a Nicolarsen Cave style atlatl. basically a minimally modified stick (mock plum) with tied on antler spur and boatstone. the second is a slightly modernized WDC basketmaker made from unfinished maple and tanned deerhide. i have matching primitive darts for each, one from rabbitbrush with a flint head and wild turkey fletchings, and the other willow with obsidian and pheasant.

Making another stone tool Basketmaker, a truncated handle this time

Here are some photos from my process (Still ongoing) of making a stone-tools truncated handle basketmaker from bush honeysuckle, a hard wood with a subtle grain.  I harvested the wood with a hand axe made from a stone I found in the creek this morning. 54 minutes in on this so far, not counting harvesting the tree.

Dart Length Question from an Ignoramous

I'm posting this here at the request of Basketmaker II, as a result of an exchange of PMs.

The basic question I have is this:  why is a dart length of 6-7 feet so universal amongst modern atlatlists, when I have better luck with heavy darts about 4 feet long?

Now for the background.....  First off, understand that I'm no expert at all with atlatls.  I just tinker on my own and make things that work for me.  I'm not trying to replicate anything, just trying to make an effective weapon.  One of the major components of both my darts and atlatls is duct tape because it's quick and easy, which are deciding factors when you view all your creations as prototypes and/or expendable ammo.

All my points are either blunt, unknapped citronel pebbles or copper tubing that I've flattened in a vise and filed edges on.  Both are hafted with duct tape and (for the blunts) tongue depressors.  I also...

On Penetration

In other threads the issue of penetration has come up in connection with heavy vs. light points and darts.  I'd like to expound on this.

The way I see it, penetration is more about momentum than kinetic energy.  This is because momentum is a vector and kinetic energy is a scalar, and penetration is all about vectors.  You have an object in motion trying to stay in motion in a certain direction competing with the target's attempt to stop it by applying an opposing force.

The target stops the projectile by applying a resistive force against its forward progress.  Target resistance is proportional to the square of the velocity.  So let's assume you have 2 projectiles as follows:

#1:  mass = 4, velocity = 2, momentum = 8
#2:  mass = 2, velocity = 4, momentum = 8
They also have the same shape of point so cut through the target with equal ease, making this a...

Appropriate Dart Size

Hello all, I'm new to atlatl and I'm experimenting with dart size. I would go with a 6 1/2 ft dart including fore shaft but I don't like the idea of throwing a dart that's bigger in length than I am tall, I'm about 5ft and I'm a bit skeptical about throwing something of that length. Being 13 I'm not big or masculine and a 4ft dart seems about right for me. Currently I'm throwing 4ft darts, they are 10mm in diameter and are dowels with duct tape fletching and a widdled on point. But I'm unsure as to go bigger or stay at the current size and I would like others thoughts.

Two Piece Darts

I'm looking into making 2 piece darts but trying to find information on them or how-tos is difficult. I've heard of the 'scarf and joint' method but the information isn't clear enough to actually begin building them. How do you make them?

Hey Warrior Yetti - Dart Flex and Dart Rotation?

Just wondering if anyone present on the forum when the above thread took place saved Pascal's videos? A while back he graciously sent me some of the more important ones, but I keep thinking back about the strong memories the videos provoked and kicking myself for not saving all of them.

What in your opinion is the effective hunting range of the atlatl and dart? For instance, how far would you feel comfortable throwing at a deer? For clarity sake you might discuss below why you might feel more or less comfortable taking risky shots at different species of animals.

it's official! i got the word from the park this morning and we're set for march 21-24. we actually have one of the two group sites they set aside for us for a day early and a day late, 20th-25th, so if you are into an extended stay like i am then feel free to join me. my apologies to anyone who couldn't make these dates, but we tried to accomadate the largest group of people we could.

for those of you who aren't familiar with V of F, it's Paleoplanet's and the WAA's annual atlatl and primitive skills gathering at the beautiful Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada about 45 minutes north of Las Vegas. the park gives us two giant gorgeous private group camp sites free of charge, provides several 3D targets, and a range under the famous Atlatl Rock, a giant formation covered in ancient petraglyphs of atlatls, hunters, and prey. there are several ISAC contests everyday of the event, a 3D shoot, the Primitive Weapons Challenge, the Persistance Hunters run, and tons of other...
